Okay, truth! There is no way I, or anyone else, can tell you which three films with digital elements are the greatest. However, I am going to share three of thebest movies about digital marketing that infuse a lot of relevant concepts into a strong plot.

In no particular order, here are three top movies about digital marketing that you should watch, and that I often reference in classes:

1. Chef (2014)

Jon Favreau wrote, directs and stars in this Chef, a film about a bonding roadtrip for a boy, Percy (Emjay Anthony), his father (Favreau) and business partner (John Leguizamo). Favreau plays Chef Carl Casper, a cook “fed up” with the lack of innovation in his owner’s restaurant. Inspired by his ex-wife (Sofia Vergara), Carl picks up a food truck and head’s up a long journey home that includes stops to sell sandwiches along the way.

This film offers a nice father-son storyline, but it has plenty of great social media components as well. In a couple scenes, Percy teaches his dad how Twitter works. In one, a major faux pas points to the importance of knowing how a channel works before using it. Percy also leverages geo-tagging features on social media to attract crowds every time the truck makes a stop. Scarlett Johansson and Robert Downey, Jr. co-star.

2. Moneyball (2011)

Fans of this Brad Pitt-movie may not immediately think of marketing. However, Moneyball delivers a great depiction of the massive transition toward data-driven business and marketing decisions that have taken over in the last several years.

Pitt stars as Oakland A’s General Manager Billy Beane. Tasked with the impossible job of turning the A’s into a contender on a slim budget, Beane leans on analytics insights from a young up-and-comer, Peter Brand (Jonah Hill). By using data and analytics over subjective analysis, Beane managed to help the A’s compete with the Yankees despite a significantly smaller budget. Beane’s early adoption of data for decision-making inspired a transformation in the game of baseball, and foreshadowed a similar takeover in business.

3. The Social Network (2010)

This list of movies about digital marketing would be incomplete without a classic in the social media realm. The Social Network tells the story of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, and the development of the most massive social media network (currently 1.9 billion users) in the world.

Naturally dramatized and certainly depicting a negative perspective of Zuckerberg’s personality, this film is directed by David Fincher and stars the talented Jesse Eisenberg as the central figure. Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake and Rooney Mara co-star.

If these aren’t enough to keep you busy, here are some additional top movies with digital marketing elements to add to your viewing list: The Internship (2013), Her (2013)
