When experts in social media communicate verbally or digitally, their commentary often provides access to great quips that are words for others to live by in digital marketing.

The following are five of the best social media marketing quotes (in no particular order), along with analysis of their meaning and value to marketers. Feel free to share your favorites in the comments section to follow!

1. “Focus on how to be social, not how to do social.” — Jay Baer, Convince & Convert

Jay Baer“How do I promote on social media?” or “How do I use social media for my business?” are common questions marketers hear from prospects and clients. These questions are based on the false-premise that you can “do social.” In fact, socializing on social media is quite similar to socializing in the physical realm, outside of the lack of face-to-face connection. Your goal is to engage your audience in genuine conversations about topics of interest, concerns and problems, before you attempt to guide prospects toward a purchase.

2. “Social media was not intended to be the world’s shortest press release.” — Jay Baer, Convince & Convert

Baer also gets credit for this great quote referencing the overly-promotional strategy a lot of companies and marketers employ on social media. Just as people avoid telemarketers and traditional commercials, they don’t follow accounts of individuals and businesses that post sales pitch after sales pitch. In my book, A Comprehensive Guide to Digital Marketing Strategy, I discuss the common “Rule of Thirds,” which suggests that you include your own content, content from others and direct interaction with other users as three components of your social message strategy.

3. “Don’t use social media to impress people; use it to impact people.” — Dave Willis

This quote by Dave aligns with the point about being social. It also illustrates the importance of being genuine and authentic. These are the traits that drive connections, networking, respect and influence. When people prioritize influence before authenticity, it is a short-sighted endeavor.

4. “If you think it’s expensive to hire a social media professional, just wait until you hire an amateur.” — Stuart Davidson

There are a lot of faux pas that have occurred affecting major brands on social media that didn’t turn to adequately-compensated, expert management. Thinking you can just put an untrained intern or non-dedicated personnel in charge of your social media accounts is unwise. The people running your accounts drive the digital image of your brand, which can become massive in scale.

5. “What happens on social media stays on Google forever.” — YourSocial

This is one of the most-often cited quotes about social media. It points to the risks of social media, particularly for brands that don’t have a plan or that don’t abide by basic principles of thinking before hitting the “Send” button on a post. In addition to poor planning, emotions and lack of due diligence contribute to delivery of regrettable posts that are quickly captured and stored in cyberspace forever.

Conclusions

These are five of the best social media marketing quotes that offer perspective on how to effectively plan and execute on social media channels. Ponder these quotes and insights and integrate them into your strategy. Feel free to add a comment with your favorite, or with other top quotes on social media marketing!
