There is no question that data drives most of the important things that happen in contemporary marketing. However, big data is too cumbersome for manual analysis, which is why automated tools are necessary to execute analytics.
The following are five of the best analytics quotes (in no particular order) from top experts, along with analysis of their meaning and value to marketers. Feel free to share your favorites in the comments section to follow!
1. “The goal is to turn data into information, and information into insight.” — Carly Fiorina
I thought it seemed best to start this list of top analytics quotes with one that is more straightforward regarding the role of data and analytics. Former Hewlett-Packard CEO and 2016 Republican Presidential Candidate Carly Fiorina is on point in explaining that the value of data does not come from raw inputs, but from your ability to interpret its meaning so you can make sound business decisions.
2. “If we have data, let’s look at data. If all we have are opinions, let’s go with mine.” — Jim Barksdale
Data and analytics replaces educated guesswork for business leaders. Barksdale is noting that verified data is much more likely to yield accurate, effective decisions than the influential opinions of top leaders. Human intuition is still important, but facts always trump opinions when the goal is accuracy.
3. “Without big data analytics, companies are blind and deaf, wandering out onto the Web like deer on a freeway.” — Geoffrey Moore
This analytics quote comes from a 2012 Tweet (see below). Moore’s point emphasizes the major competitive disadvantage your business faces if it attempts to operate without analytics in an industry that is dominated by it. Imagine showing up to play a game, and everyone but you knew the game and the players in advance.

4. “Business leaders should not rely heavily on the past actions of their companies. By following tradition and not the data, you could be stifling your company’s growth.” — Shayla Price
Shayla eloquently articulates that companies being mired in tradition is one of the biggest stumbling blocks to the successful use of data analytics.
Company leaders that feel like they’ve done things right for the past 30 years and shouldn’t consider change will likely get left in the dust of 30-somethings willing to let data drive their decisions.
5. “In God we trust. All others must bring data.” — William Edwards Deming
As an Iowan, I’m a bit partial to this line from one of the most famous (and Iowa born) engineers and statisticians in U.S. history.
Deming died in 1993, well before “analytics” was a household concept. However, his background in statistics obviously taught him that no human is more trustworthy than accurate data.
6. “Data beats emotions.” — Sean Rad
These three simple words from Tinder Co-Founder Sean Rad are loaded with a powerful meaning. A lot of leaders promote the importance of sticking to “gut instinct,” which is often just a way of rationalizing a decision fueled by emotions. Don’t get married to a business decision without checking the data to ensure you are headed for marital bliss.
These are five of the best analytics quotes that offer perspective on how to effectively gather, store and use data to build and execute accurate marketing strategies. Ponder these statements and insights and integrate them into your strategy. Feel free to add a comment with your favorite, or with other top quotes on analytics!
